Sound Card Issues

Previous Top Next |
| If you want to study Morse code using Ham University, you must have a properly functioning sound card.
|
| | If you have an antique sound card and Ham University does not appear to be producing the correct sound, that's probably the excuse you've been waiting for to get yourself a brand new sound card. In the last few years, sound cards have solved many of their early problems and now offer amazing value for very modest amounts of money.

| Sometimes you can get a better sound by going to the Sound Controls Dialog Box under the Preferences Menu and varying the Pitch or the Attack.

| If you have problems with a relatively recent sound card, check the manufacturer's web page to make sure you have the latest driver for it.

|
| If you get the strange Windows message 'Header Jam' it is because another program is also trying to use your sound card. Shut down any other programs you are running. If that fails, reboot. Sometimes even screensavers are the culprit and may need to be shut off.

| Ham University puts out a very precise waveform. However, some sound cards think they can "improve" on what we put out with the result that extra clicks and pops are heard. SoundBlaster cards are particularly prone to this problem. Check out these web pages for possible remedies:

| Some relief can be obtained by turning up the volume inside Ham University and turning down the volume on your speakers. If all else fails you may need to replace your SoundBlaster sound card or use a different PC.
